One of the first things you will probably what to do is set up customers in QuickBooks so that you can then raise invoices and receive payments from those customers.

Here are the steps

  • In the top menu select "customers"

  • then "customer centre" in at the top of the drop down list

TIP: There is a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J that will take you straight to the customer centre.

(this means hold down the "Ctrl" key with one finger and press the "J" key once with another finger)

This then opens a new window in QuickBooks

Then click "New Customer & Job" and in the dropdown list click on "New Customer"

Right now here are some tips.

The top box is the customer name as it appears in lists etc. Have a system you stick to so customers appear consistently in lists etc this will make things easier when you are using QuickBooks later.

Personally I always put the surname first in "customer name" e.g. Jones Mrs J (or you could use Jones J Mrs if). For one thing this type of thinking ahead helps avoid duplicating the same customer.

Then at least fill in the customers name on the first line of the address details you can add the rest of the address later as you go along if you want.

Hey Presto, you have your first customer in.

Remember you can always come back and add lots more detail about the customer as you go along to improve the depth of your data (always useful)

In the Address Details box type the customers name as you want it to appear on invoices, statements etc you will be sending to the customer. e.g Mrs J Jones
